Abstract Telephone surveys have a long history in social and economic researches and its correlated problems in term of survey quality have been studied from different points of view in many analyses. On the other hand, in the last years web survey had a remarkable development in this framework due to its advantages in term of speed and cost compared with any other “conventional” methods. However, data quality of online questionnaires, as any new methods for collecting data, needs to be deeply analysed because it can be affected by non response and errors tied to a self-administered questionnaire. The aim of this paper is try to measure the marginal effect of web data collection mode on survey statistics with respect to a collection mode through telephone. Logically, we need a panel survey in order to assume that all other attributes of the design are the same as in the survey to which the web survey is compared. In fact, with a panel survey the respondents at all waves can be compared and the differences, most likely, can be attributed to the communication mode itself, even though other possible reasons for differences have to be opportunely evaluated. Essentially, this paper reports the results of a research project that aims to collect information on the transition from university to work of a panel of graduates in Economics at the University of Naples “Parthenope” interviewed in two times with different data collection modes: i) by telephone interview at wave 1 in 2003; ii) by web questionnaire at wave 2 in 2005. The behaviours and the responses of the same individuals to the Web and the telephone survey are compared in order to measure the marginal effect mode of the web survey.
